Welcome to Primary
Year 1 and Year 3
In Year 1 and Year 2, students build on the rich learning experiences they enjoyed in kindergarten. Our curriculum is primarily based on the Cambridge Primary Programme, thoughtfully adapted to align with the educational outcomes of Cheltenham College in the UK. We prioritize flexibility in our curriculum to nurture each child’s unique interests and needs.
Students are taught in mixed-ability classes, where activities are tailored to accommodate diverse academic levels and learning styles. With small class sizes, children benefit from a close-knit and supportive environment, allowing them to apply classroom concepts to independent and creative projects. Most subjects are taught by their class teacher, fostering a strong and familiar connection.
Each child sets personal achievement targets in collaboration with their teacher, and these goals are shared with parents to ensure a supportive learning journey. By the end of Year 2, students are well-prepared and confident to transition into Junior Prep (Years 3 and 4), ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
Years 4 to 6
These years are filled with opportunities and joy. While providing your child with a solid academic foundation is just the beginning, we take immense pride in our vibrant and supportive community. We are dedicated to ensuring that your child receives the highest quality education in the classroom, enjoys a diverse array of sporting, musical, and artistic opportunities, and benefits from exceptional pastoral care. Our holistic approach nurtures and guides them as they grow from childhood into their teenage years.
Secondary education begins in Year 7, where we continue to build on our strong academic and all-around curriculum while placing a significant emphasis on pastoral development. The additional two years (Years 7 and 8) allow students to grow as leaders and learn the importance of responsibility. Many children who transition to secondary schools after Year 6 can find the experience overwhelming. In contrast, our program provides them with the time and space to absorb everything they learn, encouraging them to approach each task with an open mind and a curious spirit, free from constraints.
We look forward to ensuring that your child receives an extraordinary education—one that challenges them while also bringing joy and sparking engaging conversations at home.
School Day
At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, we recognize the importance of a comprehensive education, which is why we offer an extended school day until 3:30 PM, with additional optional activities available into the evening. Life in Our Primary School
At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, children in the Primary program grow into independent and curious learners, developing confidence in themselves and their surroundings.
Years 3 to 6
Our nurturing environment allows our experienced teachers to build strong relationships with each child, enabling them to understand what inspires and engages them. This personalized approach ensures that we can tailor the school experience to meet the individual needs and learning styles of every student.
We take pride in our favourable staffing ratios, with each Primary class led by a dedicated teacher and supported by a full-time teaching assistant. This ensures that every child receives the attention and support they need to reach their full potential.
Communications
We warmly welcome parents to be an active part of our school community. Each morning, we offer a flexible drop-off period, allowing your child to settle in comfortably while allowing you to connect with our staff and other parents.
To keep you informed about your child’s activities, we provide timetables and information boards outside each classroom. Additionally, our monthly e-newsletter highlights the joyful experiences your little ones are enjoying at school.
Regular coffee mornings are a great way to meet fellow parents, and our curriculum workshops offer valuable insights into what your child is learning in the classroom, equipping you with tools to reinforce their education at home.
Years 3 to 6
These years are full of opportunity and fun. Providing your child with a strong academic foundation is only the start of our offering.
We are extremely proud of our vibrant and supportive community. We ensure that your child receives the best education in the classroom, enjoys a wide range of sporting, music and artistic opportunities and benefits from exceptional pastoral care. Our holistic approach nurtures and guides their path from children through to their teenage years.
Secondary starts at Year 7. The academic and all-round curriculum continue but most importantly we can focus on their development pastorally. These extra two years (Years 7 and 8) allow children to develop as leaders and learn responsibility. Children who leave for their senior school at the end of Grade 6 often find it intimidating and cold. 11 year olds mixing with 17-year-olds can be a daunting prospect. At Cheltenham, your 12 year old will have the chance to lead their junior school and so arrive at their Senior school fully prepared for the next step of their journey armed with intellectual curiosity, quiet confidence, and a kind soul.
Children have the time and space to absorb everything that they learn. Our aim is for them to approach every task with an open mind, an inquisitive nature and with no constraints.
We look forward to ensuring that your child receives an extraordinary education that challenges them, but also puts a smile on their face and gives them plenty to talk about when they get home.
Children enter Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur at the end of Year 7.
Academic
At our Primary, we have clear goals and a focused approach to achieving them.
We aim to foster a ‘growth’ mindset and a ‘can-do’ attitude, both inside and outside the classroom. While your child progresses through the Prep, we take personal pride in helping him or her to blossom.
Lower Primary
Children enter Lower Primary in Year 1, where our primary goal is to instil a lifelong love of learning. We achieve this by making subjects come alive. New topics often kick off with special immersion days featuring themed activities and dressing up, which encourage creativity and engagement. Students enjoy lessons in dedicated Prep facilities, providing a warm and familiar environment that allows them to fully embrace their subjects and build lasting friendships.
In Lower Primary, children are increasingly encouraged to take responsibility for their learning. Assessments become more structured, and students benefit from greater specialist teaching. While we primarily follow the Cambridge Primary Programme, we maintain the flexibility to personalize learning journeys, catering to individual interests and needs. Throughout this phase, we nurture curious minds and foster a fun, engaging atmosphere through thematic and project-based learning.
In Years 1 and 2, students are taught by their class teacher for most subjects within mixed-ability classes. Specialist teachers are introduced for subjects such as , Social Studies, languages, PE, and others.
Beyond the classroom, dedicated playtime and a wide range of clubs and activities provide children with ample opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills.
Our subject specialist approach allows children to engage with a broad curriculum, whilst unlocking talents and discovering interests in particular topics. It also gives them the chance to expand their perceived academic boundaries in preparation for Cheltenham Secondary.
As they progress, children advance from the Cambridge Primary Programme to the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme. We also encourage them to take greater levels of responsibility for organising themselves and for demonstrating leadership potential.
Pastoral Care
At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, all staff are highly skilled and trained in pastoral care. We believe that ensuring children feel happy, safe, and supported at school is the most effective way to help them reach their full potential.
We cultivate a genuine sense of belonging, ensuring that each child is recognized as an individual and feels secure within our community. This approach allows us to identify when a little extra care and attention may be needed.
Each student belongs to a house, fostering loyalty, pride, and a sense of belonging. This system encourages pupils to interact with both older and younger students, deepening their sense of community, inclusivity, and responsibility
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At Cheltenham Kuala Lumpur, English is the primary language of instruction. We recognize that many of our students are learning in a language that is not their mother tongue, which is why we offer outstanding EAL programs to ensure that all pupils can fully engage with the curriculum. Our EAL offerings include both group sessions and one-on-one tuition, along with additional teaching resources, online activities, and mentoring support.
Students participating in EAL lessons are closely monitored, with regular assessments to track their progress. Please note that there is an additional charge for EAL support, which may be identified during your child’s admission process or as they continue their journey through the school.
Learning Support
We are committed to ensuring that every student can access the curriculum effectively. Our comprehensive EAL programs are designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, helping them to thrive academically and socially.
